2025 Staff Training Initiative Announced

Registration is now open for the 2025 Winter Staff Training Initiative. This year’s program features focus topics for district staff with communications and administrative roles. The webinar schedule includes:

  • Presentations on agricultural outreach through the PA Ombudsman program
  • Understanding the legislative process
  • Roundtable sharing sessions on administrative resources and district budgeting
  • The 5th Annual Conservation District Video Awards

The initiative is capped off by a training workshop, Inspiring Action with Public Speaking, on March 12 in State College, PA. Programs are open to all district and partner personnel. Visit Building for Tomorrow for registration and session descriptions.

Register Now for 2025 Employment Law Seminars

Adam Long of McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC will present Employment Law for Conservation Districts this February. The presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of practice and policy for lawfully and effectively managing conservation district staff, as well as updates on recent and significant employment law developments.

There will be three opportunities to attend: February 18 in Cranberry Township, February 19 in State College, and February 20 in the Allentown area. All conservation district directors, associate directors, management staff, and partners are encouraged to attend. Networking will begin at 9:30 a.m., and seminars will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Seminar registration is $35 per attendee. Lunch and refreshments are provided, and all attendees will receive a bound reference document summarizing the presentation and policy recommendations. Visit Building for Tomorrow to register.

Reminder: Submit your 2024 Video Content for CDVA’s

Attention all district video creators! It’s time to submit your best work for this year’s Conservation District Video Awards. Our 5th Annual CDVA presentation is scheduled for February 13, when we will screen the entries and award the coveted CONDIVA trophy to the top-scoring video for 2024. To submit your video, complete and return the 2024 Entry Form before January 3.

Managers – there’s still time to register for Team Management & Strengths-Based Leadership, a one-day training on Wednesday, October 23, at the Ramada Conference Center in State College, PA. The training is open to all district managers and executive directors who have completed a CliftonStrengths assessment. There is no charge to attend, but registration is required. 2024 New Manager Training & Management Summit: Inspired!

Sixty-four managers, management staff, and partners attended the 2024 Summit at the Wyndham State College from September 17-19, 2024. Christopher Ridenhour delivered an energizing keynote on Day 1; new managers were introduced and participated in table discussions on capacity building, Carl Deluca presented a PA Department of Environmental Protection update, and Suzanna Windon, Assistant Professor, Youth and Adult Leadership, Penn State Extension spoke on volunteer motivation and engagement. Day 2 featured an Ethics in the Workplace workshop facilitated by Mary Kay Williams. Ten new district managers and 9 partner staff participated in New Manager Training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday.

All district and partner management staff are invited to join us for the 2024 Management Summit on September 18 & 19 at the Wyndham Garden State College Conference Center. Strategic Planning Grants

Building for Tomorrow is accepting Letters of Intent for 2024-25 Strategic Planning Grants. The program will reimburse up to a maximum of $1,500 in expenses related to developing a strategic plan. Visit Building for Tomorrow for information and requirements.

CliftonStrengths for Conservation Districts

The CliftonStrengths assessment identifies an individual’s unique set of talent areas. It provides participants with an opportunity to learn about how their talents form the foundations for strengths that can contribute to success and fulfillment in all areas of life. Nearly 350 district staff have participated in the CliftonStrengths for Conservation Districts Initiative since its launch in 2022. Building for Tomorrow will continue to offer this valuable development tool to districts through April 2025. The initiative is open to all district personnel, including the individual assessment and team-building workshops for participating districts. Management Summit Day 2 Focuses on Ethics in the Workplace

Management Summit Day 2 on Thursday, September 18, will feature an interactive workshop on Ethical Issues in the Workplace, presented by Mary Kay Williams of Mindshift Consulting. This session will examine the definition of ethics and how values, morals, and beliefs impact ethics in the workplace. A discussion of the Ethical Triangle concept and common behaviors associated with ethics violations will be informed by case studies and examples of real-life district scenarios. It will also include the importance of insightful questions in making ethical decisions.
