Huntingdon County Conservation District planted 16 acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer along a tributary to Crooked Creek at a farm in Huntingdon County. Butler County Conservation District planted 0.36-acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer along a tributary to Big Run in Butler County. The buffer was located on a pasture field. Beaver County Conservation District planted 6.5-acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer at Zelienople Airport in Beaver County. The project cost $24,948.00 and was paid for through PACD’s multi-functional buffer sub-grant program: https://pacd.org/?page_id=17536

Chester County Conservation District and Warren County Conservation District completed projects through PACD’s multi-functional buffer sub-grant program. 

• Chester County Conservation District planted 1.1 acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer on a dairy farm in Chester County. The project cost $9,850.
• Chester County Conservation District planted 5.5 acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer on a farm in the White Clay Creek watershed in Chester County. The project cost $52,289.
• Warren County Conservation District planted 1.3 acres of multi-functional riparian forest buffer on a farm in the Conewango Creek watershed in Warren County. The project cost $4,252.94.

PACD was awarded a Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2) grant from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to offer sub-grants from 2022-2024.

Applications for riparian forest buffer projects under the new program will be accepted until June 30, 2024. Multi-functional buffers are encouraged, but conventional buffers are also eligible under this grant. The sub-grants will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

A 50:50 match is required. Penn State’s Master Watershed Steward Program and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Keystone 10 Million Trees Program will work with conservation districts to provide the match.

There is $95,000 available statewide.

**We still have approximately $100,000 available for multi-functional riparian buffers as well! Applications for the multi-functional buffer program will be accepted until June 30, 2023. No match is required for this grant, but buffers must be multi-functional.

The application deadline for PACD’s multi-functional riparian forest buffer program has been extended until June 30, 2023. About $100,000 is still available for projects statewide. Pennsylvania’s conservation districts are encouraged to apply for funding to install multi-functional buffers with landowners. The sub-grant program is first-come, first-served. No matching funds are required!

Since 2018, over $590,000 has been allocated to multi-functional riparian buffer projects covering more than 125 acres.
